Island Pet Resources
There are lovely places to stay with your dog while vacationing on Mackinac Island. Pet sitters are found by asking the housekeeping staff or college students who work on the Island once you are here.

Off Island Kennels

There are no kennels on Mackinac Island but there are a few in the area. We recommend Bay Pines in Harbor Springs, Michigan. They are about a half hour drive from the ferry docks and offer great kennels, grooming and all veterinary services.

Pet Friendly Attractions
Most attractions on the Island are pet friendly. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours permits small dogs that are willing to sit on their owners laps. Larger dogs are permitted but if they need a seat, they are charged a child's fare, all dogs must be horse friendly.

The two Butterfly conservatories do not permit dogs inside, though both offer tie outs and fresh water for your pooch during your visit. (dogs seem to have issues with attacking the butterflies).

Jack's Livery welcomes quiet dogs that are horse friendly for their Drive Your Own Buggy tours.

Fort Mackinac is dog friendly, though owners should pay attention to the canon firing schedule and gun demonstrations as many dogs are frightened by the sound of gunfire and canon fire. We suggest taking your dog to the west end of the Fort during these demonstrations if you think your pooch is not hunting dog material.

City Ordinance
Please know, all dogs must be kept on their leash at all times and owners must clean up after their dogs. There is a $100 fine assessed for not cleaning up after your dog.
